Beyond the ordinary

How It All Began

The Dreckly Boys were born from a song, a summer evening, and a spark of inspiration.

In July 2022, founder Pete Roycroft was in Morzine in the French Alps when he met a great man called Gary Venning. During a BBQ, Gary sang The Fields of Athenry.

That moment — the setting, the camaraderie, the power of men singing together — stayed with Pete long after he returned home.

By September, a cunning plan had formed.

Back at home,Pete asked his mates one Sunday if they fancied giving singing a go. He approached Alister Berry and asked him to take the helm — thankfully, he agreed.

The idea was simple: one gig only.

On Christmas Eve 2022, the newly formed Dreckly Boys performed for local children and raised over £900 for charity. That was meant to be the beginning and the end.

But something special had started.

The lads didn’t want to stop. The atmosphere, the friendships, the buzz of performing — it had struck a chord. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Pete has always loved male voice choirs. Back in 1990, while working as a continental coach driver, he had the privilege of taking Chasewater Male Voice Choir to Hamburg. That experience left a lasting impression and quietly planted a seed that would grow decades later.

Today, the Dreckly Boys are about far more than singing. They bring men together, build friendships, support mental wellbeing, and raise money for good causes — all with plenty of Cornish spirit and a good dose of “dreckly.”
